This past weekend the Men’s and Women’s ultimate teams combined forces to once again play in Gettysurg’s Coed tournament. With a large freshmen class half of each team came out on Saturday and the other half on Sunday.
On Saturday the first game was against Penn College and was a convenient first game because their team was just starting up to. Working on cycling all players in eventually the team went on a 3 point stand to win on universe point 13-12. The next game against York College was basically the same story. The game was kept close and the team once again made a 3 point run to win the game on universe point. The next few games were harder because Gettysburg Alum and Gettysburg had strong teams taking advantage of our attempt to rotate new players in. Overall Saturday we went 2-2, which is a better record than past years at this tournament. The main goal of initiating the new players to game speed, learning how to throw a zone, and running a ho’ stack were all accomplished with success.
On Sunday our first game was against IUP. Wanting to try out our zone with the players we had on Sunday we threw it early. It proved to be effective and proved to be one of the main reasons for our victory over IUP 13-5. Our next game was a hard fought battle against Shippensburg. We tried to run the zone again, but they had better handlers and were able to work it through a little better. Then we played SUNY Fredonia and won. We were clearly better conditioned and it proved to be an opportunity to work our rookies in. The final game was against VCU, which ended in a loss, however the freshmen as well as some vets learned from playing against a better team.
